Healthy environment

More and more people understand that it is everyone’s responsibility to keep our planet healthy! By taking care of the environment you also take care of yourself and your family. Our food production causes one-third of worldwide CO 2 emissions and has an impact on ecosystems such as tropical forests. By eating less cheese, dairy products and meat you can reduce the human impact on the environment. Vegetable products such as peanuts and nuts cause less impact and are therefore a good alternative.

So peanuts and nuts fit perfectly into a lifestyle with care for the environment. How? Read the tips below and find out!

1. Eat peanuts or nuts instead of meat

The production of meat causes a lot of CO 2 emissions and has therefore a negative influence on our environment. Therefore you can choose not to eat meat every day. Peanuts and nuts are a good source of proteins, just as meat, but are a much more environmentally friendly choice. And compared to other meat replacers such as ready-to-use meat replacers, fish, cheese and eggs, nuts have the least impact on the environment.

2. Buy and cook what you need

Do not buy and cook more food than you really need. In the average household people throw away ten per cent of the food they buy. This is 45 to 60 kilograms of food per person per year that is being thrown away. Of course this is an unnecessary waste of food considering that food production consumes a lot of energy and causes one-third of worldwide CO 2 emissions.

3. Conserve food carefully

Food products are best conserved at the right temperature. This information can be found on every product packaging. Peanuts and nuts are easy to keep fresh for a long period of time. After opening, peanuts can be conserved for 3 to 4 days, nuts for a week. But if you seal the packaging hermetically they stay fresh and tasty for as long as several weeks.

4. Buy fewer products that are transported by air

Many products in the supermarket are imported from other countries. Products such as soft fruits and fresh herbs are often transported from other continents by air. Products that can be conserved for a longer period of time, such as potatoes, apples, bananas or peanuts and nuts are mostly transported by boat. This is a much more environmentally friendly method of transport, causing significant less CO 2 emissions. So try to choose fewer products that are transported by air.
